In May, we wrote to @UNESCO. Not to complain. But to update them on the Assomption hotel development threatening to damage one of their own World Heritage Sites: Aldabra Atoll. We got no reply. What we did get - by mistake - was an email from the CEO of the institution mandated to protect Aldabra (@sif_seychelles): “UNESCO will not entertain them.” UNESCO’s own World Heritage Centre says “we must empower young people to protect” World Heritage. Apparently that only applies when it’s convenient. The @iucn_official - UNESCO’s own scientific adviser on World Heritage matters - has rated the hotel development threatening Aldabra a “high threat.” Seychellois and international scientists have raised concerns. Seychellois communities have spoken out. And still, the door is closed. This isn’t just about Aldabra. It’s about whether “protecting shared natural heritage” and “empowering youth” are genuine commitments - or just good PR. Tell UNESCO that’s not good enough.
