Crossing The Line ceremony is a ritual that began with the Cacophony Society Zone Trips. The term Zone was taken from a couple of references which refer to the disorientation with a new environment; 'Gravity's Rainbow', a 1973 novel written by Thomas Pynchon, and also the 1979 science fiction movie 'Stalker' by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
