On 25 June 1899 four Denver papers - the Times, Post, Republican and Rocky Mountain News - all ran a front-page story that China planned to demolish the Great Wall and replace it with a road, with American firms bidding for the contract. The Denver papers dropped it within days but the story spread east and into Europe, gaining embellishments as it went.
