Recurring Halloween custom ancestral to trick-or-treating, in which costumed children go door to door performing a song, joke or poem in exchange for treats; the word derives from 'disguising'. The first recorded North American use of the term is from 1898 in British Columbia, with a fuller description reported at Kingston, Ontario in 1911.
