The first 'absolutely no laughing' batsu game, 絶対に笑ってはいけない温泉旅館一泊二日の旅, was broadcast on Gaki no Tsukai across 27 July to 17 August 2003. The format sends the cast into a themed scenario where any laughter is punished by a caning, and it grew out of a penalty segment aired on 18 May 2003. This was a summer segment within the regular programme, not yet the New Year's Eve special the series later became.
