'Washing the lions' at the Tower of London

APR 01 1698

'Washing the lions' at the Tower of London

An early documented instance of the recurring 1 April custom: on 1 April 1698 several people were tricked into going to the Tower of London to 'see the Lions washed'. The hoax was repeated in later years, becoming a standing April Fools' joke rather than a single event.
