Boris Vian wrote the novel in about fifteen days in August 1946 and published it through Éditions du Scorpion as his own translation of a hardboiled American novel by 'Vernon Sullivan', a Black author supposedly unpublishable in the United States. A morality group sued in February 1947; Vian publicly admitted authorship in November 1948 and the book was banned in 1949. Over 110,000 copies sold.
