The Latin Church instituted the feast at a date now unknown, not before the end of the 4th century. The earliest recorded mention is the church calendar of Carthage at the end of the 4th century, and it is first found in the Leonine Sacramentary of about 485, given here as the earliest solid attestation. A recurring annual observance. Latins keep it on 28 December, Greeks on 29 December, Syrians on 27 December.
