YouTube was founded on 14 February 2005 by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. The platform removed every barrier that had kept amateur video off the internet: no hosting costs, no encoding expertise, no distribution deal. Within five years it would host an entire economy of prank channels earning millions from advertising.
