The Easter Island statue washed ashore at Zandvoort

On 1 April 1962 the sculptor Edo van Tetterode, working with the Dutch broadcaster KRO, had a mock Easter Island moai, nicknamed 'de Loeres', appear washed up on the beach at Zandvoort. Crowds came to see the supposed archaeological find. Van Tetterode subsequently established a prize for the best Dutch April Fools' hoax.
