El Obispillo revived at Burgos Cathedral

The obispillo tradition was re-established in Burgos in 1987 and has been celebrated annually since. A boy from the cathedral choir symbolically assumes the role of bishop for a day, staging a ritual inversion intended to dramatise the exaltation of the lowly. Also observed in Palencia, León and Murcia. A recurring annual custom; 1987 is the revival year, not the origin.
