Krokodil (Крокодил) - Soviet satirical magazine

Krokodil was the leading satirical magazine of the Soviet Union, its first issue published on 27 August 1922 as a supplement to Rabochaya Gazeta ('Workers' Newspaper'). A snarling red crocodile burst from its cover, the avatar of its brand of political satire. Though political satire was dangerous for much of the Soviet period, Krokodil was given considerable licence to lampoon officials. Circulation peaked around 5.8 million in 1980; it published until 2008.
