ABBA — Dancing Queen

ABBA — Dancing Queen (1976) Director: Lasse Hallström Era: Mid-1970s Europop & Disco Ascendancy (1976) - Peak era of ABBA's commercial dominance; European pop acts assimilating American disco into broadcast-ready promotional films preceding the MTV era. Exceptionally high. This is one of the earliest surviving promotional music films by ABBA and among the most-viewed 1970s music videos in digital history, having crossed 1 billion YouTube views in 2025. It is a primary source document for the pre-MTV European promotional film tradition, the Europop-disco synthesis of 1976, and Lasse Hallström's formative directorial practice. Its 4K remaster (2021) makes it one of the best-preserved artefacts of its era. The location — Alexandra's discotheque, Stockholm, now demolished — gives the video additional historical value as a visual record of a vanished cultural space. Context: Released as the lead single from ABBA's fourth studio album Arrival in August 1976, 'Dancing Queen' marked the apex of ABBA's early commercial period and became their only US Billboard Hot 100 number-one, topping charts in over 15 countries. The song received its first public performance on 18 June 1976 at a royal gala at the Royal Swedish Opera in honour of King Carl XVI Gustaf and his bride-to-be. Musically, the track represents a Europop synthesis of American disco — notably influenced by George McCrae's 'Rock Your Baby' — filtered through Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus's Scandinavian pop sensibility. The music video, shot at Alexandra's discotheque in Stockholm, exemplifies the nascent European promotional film model that ABBA and Hallström pioneered as a substitute for live television appearances in geographically distant markets such as Australia, directly catalysing the global music video industry. In 2015, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Director notes: The 'Dancing Queen' music video was filmed in 1976 at Alexandra's discotheque in central Stockholm, Sweden — a venue that no longer exists. Hallström's approach for the video followed his established method of matching visual environment to sonic content: for dance-beat songs like 'Dancing Queen', he placed the group in a discotheque setting. The production was completed under low-budget, time-constrained circumstances typical of all ABBA promo clips of the period, sometimes completing two clips in a single day. The video was remastered in ultra-high definition (4K) in August 2021 to mark the 500 million YouTube views milestone. On 29 June 2025, the video reached 1 billion views on YouTube — one of the earliest 1970s music videos to achieve this milestone on the platform.
