Religious-studies scholar Angela Puca traces the demon Asmodeus from the Avestan aeshma through Ashmedai in Jewish literature, the Book of Tobit and the Babylonian Talmud, into Christian demonology. In Tobit it is Asmodeus who kills Sarah's seven husbands and whom Raphael binds.
