Saint Raphael

Raphael is the archangel who travels incognito. He appears in a single book, Tobit, written somewhere around 200 BC and preserved at Qumran in Aramaic and Hebrew, where he attaches himself to a young man setting out from Nineveh, calls himself Azarias, and says nothing about what he is until the journey is over. Along the way there is a fish, a cure for blindness made from its gall, a demon driven out of a bedroom in Media, and a marriage arranged. Only at the end does he say the line the whole tradition rests on: that he is one of the seven who stand before God. Because of that book he became the patron of healing, of travellers, of the blind and of people looking for a spouse; because of that book he is also one of the most painted figures of the Italian Renaissance, since every workshop from Verrocchio to Rembrandt wanted a go at a boy, an angel and a dog on a road. A Spanish city swore itself to his custody after a plague. Hospitals carry his name on several continents, and in Coptic Egypt and Ethiopia his feasts run monthly. This archive follows the text, the angelology behind it, the paintings, the healing, the road, the feast days, the traditions beyond the Latin Church, and what became of him after.

A chronological documentary of 456 moments spanning 350–2026 on Loreline.
