James Delgado on the Gold Rush ships buried under downtown

The maritime archaeologist James Delgado, author of Gold Rush Port, describes the excavation of the storeships and abandoned vessels buried beneath the downtown San Francisco street grid. The great fire of May 1851 sealed the layer that makes them readable today; the Niantic came up at Clay and Sansome in May 1978 and its stern is now at the San Francisco Maritime Museum.
