The William Crocker mansion on Nob Hill before it burned

The house stood at 1170 California Street, part of the row of railroad and banking fortunes that built palaces on Nob Hill in the decades after the Gold Rush. It was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and the fire that followed, along with almost every other mansion on the hill. The photographer is unknown.
