The Great White Fleet steaming in through the Golden Gate
1908
A panoramic photograph by H. J. Knapp of the U.S. Navy's battleship fleet passing the strait on its round-the-world cruise. The painted-white squadron's arrival was a public spectacle, watched from the shoreline and the Presidio's headlands above the entrance to the bay.
