Collapsed Chinatown buildings after the earthquake
1906
Chinatown buildings standing in ruins after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the fires that followed. The photograph was made by an uncredited Chicago Daily News staff photographer and survives in the Library of Congress collection. The quarter was flattened almost completely, and its rebuilding was fought over by city officials who wanted the residents moved elsewhere.
