Angel Island station reports back on enemy alien Ernst Hamann

The Commissioner of Immigration at the Angel Island station writes to the Commissioner General of Immigration about Ernst Hamann, the German national interned on the island after arriving just after Wilson's April 1917 enemy alien proclamation. The exchange shows how the wartime alien machinery ran through the bay's immigration post. The letter is part of a National Archives San Francisco district case file.
