The Monitor: a hydraulic nozzle blasting a California hillside

Henry Sandham's print shows hydraulic mining, in which high-pressure water cannon known as monitors washed whole hillsides apart to reach the gold. The method moved enormous volumes of debris downstream and became one of the most destructive industrial practices in the state. The image was published in The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine in January 1883.
