Fully Giving In On 2 February 2025 Andrej Karpathy posts a thread on X describing a new mode of programming he calls vibe coding. The setup: dictate intent to an LLM, accept what it produces, accept the diffs without reading them, paste error messages back, repeat. The code mostly works. Sometimes it does not. The vibe is the methodology. Within a week the term is in headlines. Within a month vibe coding is in pitch decks. By April it appears in YC application essays and in Wikipedia. 02. The New Default Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf, and Replit Agent all design around the workflow Karpathy names. Programming, for the first time in fifty years, becomes a thing people do without reading the code. The professional pushback is loud and the demographic that ships shipped apps anyway is louder.
