Ghibli Filter for Everything On 25 March 2025 OpenAI releases native image generation inside GPT-4o. Within hours users discover the model will render any uploaded photograph in Studio Ghibli style with extraordinary fidelity. Family portraits, news photos, war photographs, the Trump-Zelensky Oval Office argument from late February, all converted to soft watercolor anime aesthetic. Sam Altman changes his Twitter profile picture to a Ghibli-style portrait. Hayao Miyazaki, in a re-circulated 2016 clip, calls AI animation an insult to life itself. 02. Style as Substrate The Ghibli trend reveals image AI's final stage: an artist's lifetime style is now a one-click filter applied to anything. Copyright law has no clear position. Miyazaki has no recourse. The trend burns hot for a week, fades, leaves the substrate. By April the same model is rendering everything as Wes Anderson, Pixar, Disney Renaissance, or Mucha. Style is fully commodified.
