Heads in Toilets On 7 February 2023, Alexey Gerasimov, a Georgia-based animator, uploads a 11-second video to his YouTube channel DaFuq!?Boom! It depicts a singing human head emerging from a toilet, set to the Bulgarian-Italian song Dom Dom Yes Yes (the Skibidi audio loop). The video has approximately no production value. It is also, immediately, the most-discussed children's content of 2023. By the end of 2023 the channel posts hundreds of Skibidi Toilet videos. A loose lore emerges: the singing toilet-heads are an invasive force at war with a humanoid resistance whose members have surveillance cameras, speakers, and TVs for heads. By 2024 the franchise has merchandise, a Paramount feature-film development deal (announced 2024), and an academic paper from a media-studies department analyzing it as a defining Gen Alpha cultural artifact. 02. Brainrot As Word Of The Year Oxford University Press names brain rot its 2024 Word of the Year, citing Skibidi Toilet and adjacent Gen Alpha vocabulary (rizz, fanum tax, delulu, gyatt, skibidi itself as adjective) as the defining cultural complex behind the term's usage spike. Brain rot is, on Oxford's framing, the consequence of consuming low-quality online content; Skibidi Toilet is brain rot's most famous single artifact. Whether Skibidi Toilet is in fact brain rot, or is Gen Alpha's avant-garde of post-narrative episodic surrealism that older viewers fail to read correctly, is the live media-studies debate of the late 2020s.
