The Name Enters the Charts

Aldabra is an Arabic name carried into European use by Portuguese navigators, though the sources disagree on which word: SIF gives Al-Khadra, "the green", while others derive it from the harsh, sun-baked character of the place. Both readings survive; the atoll is green and it is merciless, so neither is obviously wrong.
