A Rail Loses Flight, and the Sea Takes It

Fossils from before the inundation show a Dryolimnas rail had already lost the power of flight on Aldabra once, and was annihilated when the atoll submerged. The same lineage later flew back in from Madagascar and lost flight a second time — the clearest case of iterative evolution known in birds.
