Celina Chien speaks to @chilli.app about Friends of Aldabra’s fight to protect the Aldabra Islands from the threat of a $300 million, 6* luxury hotel development currently under construction. Aldabra Atoll has been named a ‘living laboratory’ - a 125,000 year old coral ecosystem home to 400+ species found nowhere else in the world. It’s a scientific marvel and has thrived crucially because of its remoteness from human interference. And yet only 27km away, construction is underway on a Qatari-funded, $10,000 a night hotel - being advertised as a “gateway to Aldabra”: a “gateway” to an atoll that up until now has been visited predominantly by scientists and conservationists. Island communities are facing extreme development threats, with very little say in stopping it. These are international hotel investors, so it’s the international community’s responsibility to step up and help Seychellois people.
