Assomption Island was back in the spotlight at the end of February with the following events: ▶️ 28 Feb: Hundreds of people protested in Victoria against the proposed coast guard base. ▶️ 27 Feb: SIF published a call for expression of interest for biodiversity assessment professionals. ▶️ 26 Feb: The Environment and Finance Ministries held a joint press conference to address the coast guard base proposal. ▶️ 24 Feb: The Vice-President addressed the National Assembly on the 2026 Defence Budget - with mentions of Assomption. The protest was a clear sign of growing public anger. Many Seychellois maintain their 2018 positioning of: “Tortoises, Not Troops” and that Assomption is not for sale. Some key dynamics which we are observing: 🧶 Assomption Island has become an entangled web of competing commitments made by the government. 🌀 Confusion and uncertainty are deepened by the absence of meaningful engagement with the Seychellois public and independent experts. 🐢 Is the environment becoming an afterthought?
