On Thursday 5th March at the National Assembly, Environment Minister Marie-May Jeremie was asked whether construction of the hotel on Assomption Island had resumed. Minister Jeremie confirmed that, once biosecurity facilities are in place, work will continue on the buildings that are already on the island. This goes against many of the public commitments made by the government This raises serious questions: ⚠️ This contradicts public commitments that construction would wait for the outcome of the Public Inquiry and the 1-year biodiversity assessment. ⚠️ Decisions about Assomption continue to happen behind closed doors, with the public once again being kept in the dark. Seychellois are being informed as an afterthought. ⚠️ There is still no clarity on what a “variation notice” is or what exactly “buildings that have already been built” actually means. ⚠️ How does this inspire trust in the task force? This once again shows that there is an urgent need for independent experts to monitor what is happening on the island. We need eyes that we can trust on Assomption.
