Meet the architects of Aldabra! 🐢🧱 The Aldabra giant tortoise isn’t just an iconic species - they’re a KEYSTONE species. Through grazing, seed dispersal, and enriching soils, these giants actively build and maintain the habitat around them. The wildlife and ecosystems of Aldabra are shaped by what these tortoises do. Remove them, and the whole system shifts. Aldabra is home to the largest population of giant tortoises on Earth, with more than 100,000 individuals. But tortoises also live on neighbouring Assomption Island, where they now face a direct and immediate threat from the construction of a luxury hotel development. On Assomption, their habitat is being cleared and disrupted. These tortoises are more than a symbol of Seychelles. They are architects of the living world around them.
