Happy World Dugong Day 🌊🌟 The lagoon of Aldabra Atoll covers 196 square kilometres (larger than Mahé) and has vast seagrass meadows that make it the perfect home for dugongs. Shy and notoriously elusive, dugongs rarely make contact with humans, making encounters like this especially memorable. The dugong is known by several names: 🐄 sea cow / vache de mer - though actually more closely related to elephants than cows 🧜‍♀️ mermaid - sailors in the Indian Ocean once mistook them for mythical creatures 🌿 gardener of the sea - grazing up to 40kg of seagrass every day As they feed, dugongs often attract small fish that shelter nearby or feed in the stirred-up seagrass around them - a quiet reminder of how connected life in the lagoon really is.
