🐢 Did you know that tortoises are actually turtles too? 💚 This World Turtle Day, we highlight a couple of the greatest turtle conservation stories on Earth: Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles. 🇸🇨 Aldabra is the only place where Aldabra giant tortoises still exist in the wild naturally. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, these giants now boast being the largest population of giant tortoise population in the world; all thanks to long-term conservation and habitat protection. 🌊 Aldabra is also one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles in the Western Indian Ocean. Studies have shown that nesting activity has increased by an estimated 410−665% since 1968 (Pritchard et al. 2022) – an extraordinary sign of population recovery after historical overexploitation. Aldabra reminds us that conservation works and illustrates why it is so important that Aldabra continues to be protected!
