Day 10 in our Aldabra Christmas Series. (1/3)

Day 10 in our Aldabra Christmas Series. Today’s animal is the Coconut Crab (Birgus latro). 🦀 Coconut crabs are the largest land dwelling crustaceans, with legs spanning 1 metre! And are only found in islands across the Indian Ocean and the central Pacific Ocean. 🥥 They hatch at sea and return to land to grow and live, hitching a ride on floating coconuts to save energy on their journey! 👵🏽👴🏽 They can live to be over 60 years old. 🐦 They’re not picky eaters! They usually eat  fruits, seeds and whatever is easily available, but they’ve been observed eating larger birds or each other!  💪 They have incredible grip strength and can lift objects weighing up to 30kg! Stay tuned for a new species tomorrow! 📸 Image credits: Slide 1: @evileyelander Slide 2: provided by Allen Commettant Slide 3: @celinaxchien 🎶 Song by @joe_samy_official / @s_chlochlo
