Hermès
The Paris house that has never stopped being a saddler. Thierry Hermès opened a harness workshop near the Madeleine in 1837; his grandson put a zip in a leather jacket for the Prince of Wales, then handbags in the window; the first silk carré was printed in 1937; a photograph of Grace Kelly renamed a bag in 1977 and a spilled straw basket on a Paris–London flight named another in 1984. This is the archive of all of it, the runway from Martin Margiela to Nadège Vanhée, the leather and silk ateliers, the Saut Hermès under the glass of the Grand Palais, the windows, the watches and the perfumes, the family that fought off LVMH, and the period advertisements from the years when the house still sold saddles first.

Eras
- Saddlers' House, The house before it was a global brand. Almost nothing survives on film from the saddlery years, so this facet holds genuine period artifacts only, the two founders, the trade advertisements Hermès ran when its own copy still called it a saddler, and the earliest moving footage of the Faubourg shopfront. It is deliberately short: the alternative would be filling it with modern films about the past.
- Les Sacs, The bags: the Sac à dépêches that became the Kelly, the holdall built for Jane Birkin, the Constance, the Bolide, the Haut à courroies. The objects themselves, the stories that named them, and the auction rooms where they now set records.
- Le Carré, The silk square. Ninety centimetres of twill, engraved and printed in Lyon, hand-rolled at the hem, first issued in 1937 and reissued in new designs every season since, and everything people have done with it besides tie it around their necks.
- Runway, Hermès on the catwalk: the in-house studio of the late eighties and nineties, Martin Margiela's quiet tenure, Jean Paul Gaultier's, Christophe Lemaire's, Nadège Vanhée's, and Véronique Nichanian, who ran menswear from 1988 until 2026.
- Windows & Art, The house as a patron and a stage set: Leïla Menchari's Faubourg windows, the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès and its galleries, the exhibitions, the artist collaborations, and the campaign films, which Hermès makes as short films rather than advertisements.
- Watches & Objects, Everything that is not leather or silk. La Montre Hermès at Biel and the Arceau, Cape Cod and H08 watches; the perfumes from Eau d'Hermès to the Jardins; the porcelain, the crystal, the ties, and the cars, cameras and objects other people bring to the Faubourg to be re-made.
- Savoir-faire, How the things are actually made. The leather ateliers and the saddle stitch, the silk engravers and printers of Lyon, the watchmakers at Biel, the École Hermès des savoir-faire, and the short films the house makes about single gestures, cutting, sewing, polishing, beading.
- Equestrian, The first customer was a horse. Saddlery and harness-making, the riders the house equips, and the Saut Hermès, the five-star show-jumping competition Hermès has staged under the glass roof of the Grand Palais since 2010.
- House, 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and the family that has held it since 1880: six generations of Hermès and Dumas, the 1993 flotation, the LVMH stake battle of 2010–2014 and the H51 holding that ended it, and the stores the house opens very slowly and keeps for a very long time.
- - Thierry Hermès. (1801–1878), born in Krefeld in Prussia and trained as a saddler in Normandy, opened a harness workshop in Paris in 1837 making bridles and collars for the carriage trade. He won a first-class medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1867 and never sold a handbag in his life.
- - Hermès Frères, Selliers - 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré. A 1923 trade advertisement for Hermès Frères, Selliers. Three saddles run across the top; below them a golf-club case, travel and sports bags fitted with the patented 'fermeture éclair', a cigarette case and a fitted dressing table. Eighty-six years after Thierry Hermès opened his harness workshop, the house still advertised itself as a saddler first and everything else second.
- - 'Ceinture et sac de Hermès' - Art-Goût-Beauté, May 1931. 'Pour être chic il faut porter…', the accessories page of the May 1931 issue of Art-Goût-Beauté. The central figure wears a sports dress by Worth, shoes by Hellstern, a printed crêpe-de-chine scarf and hat by the magazine itself, and a belt and bag by Hermès. Six years before the first carré, the house appears here as one accessories maker among several.
- - Émile-Maurice Hermès, by Henri Manuel. Émile-Maurice Hermès, grandson of Thierry, in a studio portrait by Henri Manuel. He commissioned the zip-fastened leather golf jacket made for Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1918, bought his brother Adolphe out in 1919, introduced the first Hermès handbags in 1922, and assembled the collection of equestrian art that still fills the top floor of 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
- - Hermès Sellier, and the agendas for 1949. The duc attelé, a horse and carriage with a groom and no driver, the house's mark, drawn after Alfred de Dreux, printed full-page in a Paris theatre programme for Feydeau's 'Occupe-toi d'Amélie' in 1948. Under the Faubourg address sit the three seasonal outposts, Biarritz, Cannes and Deauville, and a single line of news: 'Les agendas Hermès 1949 sont parus.'
- - Hermes Shop Front, 1960's - Film 90298. 1966. Hermes jewels. A jewellery collection modelled. Hermes fashion. Scarves and gloves. Fashion for 1967.
- - Amazone, in its shop bottle. A display bottle of Amazone, the Hermès eau de toilette first launched in 1974, kept in its original packaging, 'AMAZONE Eau De Toilette HERMÈS PARIS' across the glass, a marbled brown-red plastic cap, and a FACTICE sticker on the base marking it as the version made for a shop counter rather than for sale. Held by Göteborgs stadsmuseum.
- - A hat cut from a pheasant-print carré, 1976. A woman's hat made in Paris by Hermès in 1976 from a printed silk shawl, upright crown, turned-back brim, a pheasant's head across the top and the excess gathered into a bow at the back. Held by Museum Rotterdam as object 74047; a carré put to work as something other than a scarf.
- - Jane Birkin, September 1984. Jane Birkin photographed in September 1984, the year Hermès delivered the soft black leather holdall it had made for her after she spilled the contents of a straw basket in front of Jean-Louis Dumas on a Paris–London flight. She was paid a royalty on it for the rest of her life and gave most of it away.
