Jane Birkin photographed in September 1984 — the year Hermès delivered the soft black leather holdall it had made for her after she spilled the contents of a straw basket in front of Jean-Louis Dumas on a Paris–London flight. She was paid a royalty on it for the rest of her life and gave most of it away.
