Crowd smashes and burns a driverless taxi in Chinatown

On the evening of 10 February 2024, during Lunar New Year weekend, a crowd surrounded a driverless Waymo Jaguar I-Pace on Jackson Street in Chinatown, broke its windows, sprayed it with graffiti and threw a firework inside. The car burned out completely; it was carrying no passengers and nobody was hurt. The burning white robotaxi under Chinatown lanterns became the most widely circulated image of the city's backlash against autonomous vehicles.
