Two engraved views of the waterfront crowded with vessels left at anchor after their crews walked off for the diggings. The plates come from John P. Young's history of San Francisco as the metropolis of the Pacific Coast; some of the hulls were eventually run ashore and built over as the city expanded onto its own harbour.
