  1. Daimler Motorised Carriage. Late 1886. Gottlieb Daimler + Wilhelm Maybach fit a high-speed engine to a converted stagecoach. First four-wheeled gasoline car. The Daimler-Benz merger 40 years later would create Mercedes-Benz.
  2. Benz Patent-Motorwagen. January 29, 1886. Carl Benz patents the three-wheeler with a 954cc single-cylinder engine. Universally recognised as the first automobile. Patent DRP 37435. Top speed 16 km/h.
  3. Peugeot Type 1. 1889. Peugeot — a steel + bicycle company since 1810 — builds the Serpollet steam tricycle Type 1. By 1891: gasoline Type 3. Oldest continuously-operating carmaker.
  4. Panhard et Levassor — Front-Engine Layout. 1891. Émile Levassor establishes the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout (Système Panhard) that dominates car design for the next century. The conceptual blueprint of modern automotive packaging.
  5. Duryea — First American Gasoline Car. September 21, 1893. Frank and Charles Duryea drive the first successful American gasoline-powered car in Springfield, Massachusetts. Wins the first American auto race (Chicago Times-Herald, 1895).
  6. Paris–Rouen — First Automobile Race. July 22, 1894. Le Petit Journal organises the Paris–Rouen "Concours" — 126 km, 21 starters. Counts as the world's first competitive automobile event. Peugeot and Panhard share the top prize.
  7. Panhard et Levassor 4HP — First Production Car. 1894. The first car series-produced for sale. Daimler V-twin engine. Establishes the front-engine + sliding-gear transmission template that everyone copies.
  8. Lanchester — First British 4-Wheel Petrol. 1895. Frederick Lanchester builds Britain's first all-British four-wheel petrol car. Engineering-genius details (epicyclic gearbox, full pressure lubrication) decades ahead of contemporaries.
  9. Renault Founded. February 25, 1899. Louis Renault + brothers found Renault Frères in Boulogne-Billancourt. First sale: Christmas Eve 1898. Wins Paris-Vienna 1902. State-owned 1945-1996.
  10. FIAT Founded (Turin). July 11, 1899. Giovanni Agnelli + ten investors found Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. By 1910s the largest Italian industrial company; remains so for a century.
  11. Gordon Bennett Cup. 1900-1905. James Gordon Bennett Jr's international racing trophy — six annual editions across European countries. Birthed the national-team race format that eventually became Grand Prix racing.
  12. 1900 — Electric vs Steam vs Gasoline. 1900. Of 4,192 US cars produced, 1,681 are steam, 1,575 are electric, 936 are gasoline. Electric wins city-driving (no crank, no smoke). Cheap oil + Model T mass-production kill electric until 2008.
  13. Emil Jellinek + the Mercedes Name. 1900. Émile Jellinek orders 36 Daimler racing cars on condition they're named after his daughter Mercedes. Within a decade "Mercedes" = the brand. The first known case of customer-named global automotive brand.
  14. Oldsmobile Curved Dash. 1901-1907. Ransom Olds's Curved Dash is the first mass-produced car (~19,000 made). Predates Model T as the mass-market pioneer; uses stationary assembly + interchangeable parts (early-stage Fordism).
  15. Mercedes 35 HP — Modern Car Template. 1901. Wilhelm Maybach designs the Mercedes 35 HP for Daimler. Front-mounted in-line engine, honeycomb radiator, gated gearbox, pressed-steel chassis. Considered the first "modern" car; defines the template for the next 50 years.
  16. Cadillac Founded. August 22, 1902. Henry Leland founds Cadillac in Detroit on the ashes of Henry Ford's second failed company. Becomes American luxury benchmark; first interchangeable-parts car (Dewar Trophy 1908).
  17. Ford Motor Company Founded. June 16, 1903. Henry Ford + 12 investors incorporate Ford Motor Company with $28,000. The Model A (1903) sells 1,750 units in year one. Five years later: the Model T.
  18. Henry Ford. 1863-1947. Founded Ford Motor Company. Pioneered moving assembly line + $5/day wage. Visionary on mass production, conspiracy theorist on much else. Single most-consequential industrialist of the 20th century.
  19. Rolls-Royce Founded. May 4, 1904. Charles Rolls meets Henry Royce in the Midland Hotel, Manchester. The Silver Ghost (1907) earns the company a 30-year run as "the best car in the world."
  20. First Grand Prix (Le Mans). June 26-27, 1906. The first race called "Grand Prix" runs at Le Mans organised by the Automobile Club de France. Renault wins. The format eventually replaces the Gordon Bennett Cup and becomes F1's ancestor.
  21. Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. 1907. The Silver Ghost debuts. Almost silent, ran 24,000 km non-stop in a 1907 reliability trial. Earns Rolls-Royce its "best car in the world" reputation. Production runs until 1926.
  22. General Motors Founded. September 16, 1908. William Durant founds General Motors as a holding company combining Buick + Olds. By 1929 the largest company in the world. The Alfred-Sloan multi-brand strategy defines auto industry structure for a century.
  23. Bugatti Founded (Molsheim). 1909. Ettore Bugatti founds Automobiles Ettore Bugatti in Molsheim, Alsace. Type 13 wins races; Type 35 (1924) wins 1,000+ races in the 1920s — most successful racing car of all time by win count.
  24. First Indianapolis 500. May 30, 1911. Ray Harroun wins the inaugural Indy 500 in a Marmon Wasp at 74.6 mph. The single most American racing institution. Continuous Memorial Day weekend event ever since (with WW interruptions).
  25. Aston Martin Founded. 1913. Lionel Martin + Robert Bamford found Bamford & Martin. Named "Aston Martin" after Lionel's wins at Aston Hill. James Bond connection arrives in 1964 with the DB5.
  26. Duesenberg Founded. 1913. Fred + August Duesenberg build the first American DOHC straight-8. The Model J (1928) is the most powerful + expensive American car of its era. Spawns the slang "it's a duesy."
  27. Ford's $5 Workday. January 5, 1914. Ford doubles minimum wage to $5/day to reduce turnover + create customers for his cars. Press calls it "an act of social justice or shrewd business" — both true. Defines 20th-century mass-consumer template.
  28. Maserati Founded (Bologna). December 1, 1914. The five Maserati brothers found Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna. Trident logo from Bologna's Neptune Fountain. Wins Indy 500 (1939, 1940) with Wilbur Shaw.
  29. Morris Cowley — Britain's Model T. 1915-1939. The Morris Cowley + Oxford. William Morris's "bullnose" cars motorise Britain's middle class. By 1925, Morris is Britain's largest carmaker.
  30. First 24 Hours of Le Mans. May 26-27, 1923. The first 24 Heures du Mans runs on public roads near Le Mans. Chenard et Walcker wins. The endurance format becomes the most prestigious race in the world for non-F1 enthusiasts.
  31. Bugatti Type 35. 1924. Bugatti Type 35 debuts. Wins 1,000+ races in the 1920s. The aluminium-spoke wheels, horseshoe grille, ice-blue French Racing colour become permanent design icons.
  32. Chrysler Founded. June 6, 1925. Walter Chrysler founds Chrysler Corporation. Acquires Dodge (1928). The "Detroit Three" lock-in (Ford + GM + Chrysler) shapes US auto for the next 80 years.
  33. Detroit Becomes the Car Capital. 1920s. Detroit's population doubles (993K → 1.6M). Ford, GM, Chrysler all HQ'd there. By 1925: Michigan produces 80% of the world's cars. Single-industry-city template + eventual cautionary tale.
  34. Nürburgring Opens (Nordschleife). June 18, 1927. Nürburgring Nordschleife (20.8 km, 73 turns) opens. "Green Hell" (Jackie Stewart 1968). Production-car lap time becomes the global supercar pissing-contest. Closes to F1 in 1976 after Lauda crash.
  35. Enzo Ferrari. 1898-1988. Founded Scuderia Ferrari (1929) as Alfa Romeo racing arm, then Ferrari (1947). Single-minded obsession with racing; road cars existed to fund it. The greatest motorsport figurehead.
  36. First Monaco Grand Prix. April 14, 1929. First Monaco GP runs through the streets. William Grover-Williams wins in a Bugatti Type 35B. The most prestigious + most-cliché street circuit ever; defines "glamour" in motorsport.
  37. Cadillac V16. 1930-1940. Cadillac ships the V16 — the first production V16, 165 hp. Symbol of luxury at the worst possible moment (Great Depression). Only ~4,000 made over a decade.
  38. Ferdinand Porsche. 1875-1951. Designed VW Beetle + Mercedes SSK + Auto Union GP cars + Porsche 356. Founded Porsche engineering office (1931); his son Ferry built the 356 (1948). Single most-prolific 20th-century automotive engineer.
  39. Autobahn — First Section. August 6, 1932. First section of German Autobahn opens (Cologne-Bonn). Nazi government expands network dramatically 1933-39. Becomes the world's most-quoted unrestricted-speed highway by 2000s tourism.
  40. Bugatti Type 57 (Atlantic). 1934-1940. Jean Bugatti designs the Type 57. The Atlantic coupé (4 made, 3 surviving) sells for $30M+ in modern times. Most-coveted pre-war coachbuilt car; defines art-deco automotive design.
  41. Chrysler Airflow — Aerodynamic Pioneer. 1934-1937. Chrysler Airflow — first mass-production aerodynamic car. Wind-tunnel-tested. Commercial flop (too radical for buyers) but every car after WWII inherits its lessons.
  42. Auto Union Type C — Rear-Engine GP. 1936. Ferdinand Porsche-designed Auto Union Type C — mid/rear-engine V16, 520 hp. Bernd Rosemeyer drives. Decades ahead of layout convention. Foundation of Porsche's rear-engine commitment.
  43. Mercedes-Benz 540K. 1936-1939. The 540K (Kompressor — supercharged 5.4L straight-8, 180 hp). Stalin, Hermann Göring, Tyrone Power, Jack Warner own them. The single most coveted pre-war luxury car.
  44. Cord 810/812 — Front-Wheel Drive Art-Deco. 1936-1937. Gordon Buehrig's "coffin-nose" Cord 810. Hidden headlamps, front-wheel-drive, art-deco aluminium dashboard. Commercial failure (~3,000 made) but design-history landmark.
  45. Lincoln Zephyr — Streamline Modern. 1936-1942. Lincoln Zephyr — John Tjaarda + Eugene Gregorie design. Lower, sleeker, "streamline modern" aesthetic. Establishes Lincoln's 1930s-40s reputation; the seed of Continental.
  46. Silver Arrows — Mercedes W25 + Auto Union. 1934. Mercedes-Benz W25 + Auto Union Type A debut. State-subsidised Nazi-Germany engineering programme produces a decade of GP dominance. The unpainted aluminium "Silberpfeile" become an eternal motorsport aesthetic.
  47. Tatra T87 — Czech Aero Pioneer. 1937-1950. Hans Ledwinka's Tatra T87 — rear-mounted air-cooled V8, aerodynamic body. Inspires Porsche directly. Top speed 160 km/h. ~3,000 made. Hitler banned Czech officers from driving them after several fatal crashes.
  48. Volkswagen Beetle Prototype (KdF-Wagen). 1938. Ferdinand Porsche designs the KdF-Wagen ("Strength Through Joy car") — Nazi people's-car project. Post-war production at Wolfsburg from 1945 turns it into the most-produced single car platform ever (21M+ by 2003).
  49. Volkswagen Beetle Post-War Production. 1945. British REME Major Ivan Hirst restarts Wolfsburg Beetle production from bombed-out factory. By 1955: 1M Beetles. By 1972: passes Model T as most-produced single car. Final Beetle leaves Mexico July 2003 (21,529,464 built).
  50. Willys CJ — Civilian Jeep. 1945. Willys-Overland ships civilian CJ-2A. Returning GIs buy what they drove in WWII. Founds the entire "recreational off-road" + 4×4 lifestyle category that becomes Land Cruiser, Range Rover, Bronco, G-Wagen.
  51. Ferrari Founded (125 S). March 12, 1947. Enzo Ferrari debuts the 125 S — first car bearing his own name (he'd previously built Alfa-Romeo racers). 1.5L V12. Ferrari road cars exist primarily to fund the racing programme — and they always will.
  52. Soichiro Honda. 1906-1991. Founded Honda Motor Company (1948). Bike-engine workshop becomes the world's largest motorcycle + then car manufacturer. F1 from 1964; six-time engine champion.
  53. Porsche 356. June 8, 1948. Ferry Porsche's 356 No. 001 — first car under the Porsche name (Ferdinand built racers + the Beetle before). Aluminium body, mid-engine VW Beetle-derived 1.1L. The seed of every road Porsche to follow.
  54. Land Rover Series I. April 30, 1948. Maurice Wilks unveils the Land Rover at Amsterdam Motor Show — British Willys-clone designed on a Welsh beach. Production runs continuously until 2016. Foundation of British 4×4 culture.
  55. Jaguar XK120. 1948. Jaguar XK120 — 120 mph aluminium roadster, $4,000 — fastest production car in the world. "Grace, space, pace." Establishes Jaguar as global luxury-sport brand.
  56. Morris Minor. 1948-1971. Issigonis's Morris Minor. 1.6M sold. Britain's first 1M-unit car. Establishes Issigonis's small-car-packaging genius that culminates in the Mini.
  57. Ford F-Series Truck. 1948. First Ford F-series truck. Becomes best-selling US vehicle every year since 1981 (and best-selling truck since 1977). Single most-profitable product in automotive history.
  58. Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. 1950 onward. First Pebble Beach Concours runs after the World War. By 2020s: most prestigious automotive concours in the world. "Best of Show" makes car value 5×.
  59. F1 World Championship First Season. May 13, 1950. First F1 World Championship race at Silverstone. Giuseppe Farina wins for Alfa Romeo + becomes inaugural champion. The world's most-watched annual sporting series begins.
  60. Juan Manuel Fangio — 5x F1 Champion. 1951, 1954-1957. Fangio wins 5 F1 titles for four different teams (Alfa, Mercedes, Ferrari, Maserati). Record held 46 years until Schumacher 2003. Considered the best driver until Senna.
  61. Toyota Land Cruiser. 1951. Toyota builds the BJ for Korean War. By 1955 renamed Land Cruiser. Continuous production 70+ years; sold in more countries than any other Toyota. Defines mechanical-durability + off-road-credibility globally.
  62. Colin Chapman (Lotus). 1928-1982. Founded Lotus (1952). "Simplify, then add lightness." Pioneered monocoque chassis (1962), ground effect (1977), active suspension. Lotus wins 7 F1 constructors'. Sudden death (1982) just before DeLorean scandal broke.
  63. First Mille Miglia. March 26-27, 1927. The first Mille Miglia — 1,000-mile public-road race Brescia-Rome-Brescia. Ferdinando Minoia + Giuseppe Morandi win. Runs annually until the 1957 De Portago disaster.
  64. Chevrolet Corvette. June 30, 1953. First Corvette ships — fiberglass body, inline-6, automatic only. 300 made. Slow first 5 years; saved by Zora Arkus-Duntov who turns it into America's sports car.
  65. Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. 1954-1957. The 300SL Gullwing — F1-derived inline-6 with mechanical fuel injection (a first for production cars). Gullwing doors became necessary because of the tubular spaceframe chassis. Defining post-war luxury-sports car.
  66. Jaguar D-Type — 3x Le Mans Winner. 1954-1957. Jaguar D-Type — monocoque construction, 3.4L XK6. Wins Le Mans 1955, 1956, 1957. Sets the post-war Le Mans-prototype template.
  67. 1955 Le Mans Disaster. June 11, 1955. Pierre Levegh's Mercedes 300SLR launches into the crowd at Le Mans. 84 dead, 180 injured. Worst motorsport accident in history. Mercedes withdraws from racing for 33 years. Switzerland bans circuit racing entirely (until 2024).

  70. Trabant 601 (East Germany). 1957-1991. Trabant — East Germany's people's-car. Two-stroke 600cc, Duroplast (cotton + phenolic) body. 3M+ made. Becomes the symbol of GDR after the Wall falls (1989) + a permanent meme.
  71. Chevrolet Bel Air (1957). 1957. Tri-Five Chevy Bel Air. Tailfins, two-tone paint, 283 cu in V8. Single most-iconic 1950s American car; defines the entire chrome-tailfin aesthetic that 1957 represents.
  72. Fiat Nuova 500. 1957-1975. Dante Giacosa's Fiat 500 — 479cc rear-engine, 3 metres long. Motorises post-war Italy at the bottom end while Vespas do the same on two wheels. 4M+ made. Cult-classic.
  73. Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz — Peak Fins. 1959. Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz reaches peak tailfin — 42 inches. The high-water mark of American chrome-jet-age design. Within five years the entire aesthetic collapses; Cadillac never returns to this level of exuberance.
  74. Mini Launches. August 26, 1959. Alec Issigonis's Mini debuts (Morris Mini-Minor + Austin Seven). Transverse-engine front-wheel-drive packaging frees up 80% of floor area for passengers — defines small-car layout forever.
