Eras

  1. — A 16th-century depiction of Sazan. Sazan — long known to Venetian and Ottoman mariners guarding the Bay of Vlorë — as drawn in a 16th-century Mediterranean chart. For centuries it was a strategic waypoint at the mouth of the Adriatic long before it became a fortress.
  2. — The Italian occupation of Saseno, 1914. Italian forces landing to take Sazan — which they called "Saseno" — on 30 October 1914. The claim was recognised by the 1915 Treaty of London, and the island became the Italian Royal Navy's southernmost outpost.
  3. — Italian stamps overprinted for Saseno. Italian postage stamps overprinted "SASENO" for use on the occupied island in 1923 — a small artifact of the decades Sazan spent flying the Italian flag.
  4. — The Soviet split — and a sealed island. When Enver Hoxha broke with Moscow and aligned Albania with Mao's China in 1961, the Soviets were expelled and Sazan became a closed Albanian military zone — sealed off from the public for the rest of the communist era and beyond.
  5. — Sazan from the sea. The island of Sazan rising from the Adriatic — green, rugged and, for decades, entirely off-limits.

Sazan is also rumoured — never confirmed — to have housed a chemical and biological weapons facility; gas masks still lie scattered in the abandoned tunnels.
  11. — The Soviet submarine base. After 1947, Sazan and the neighbouring Pasha Liman base became a forward Soviet naval outpost — home to Whiskey-class submarines and thousands of soldiers, the USSR's deepest foothold on the Mediterranean during the early Cold War.

  14. — Karaburun-Sazan, Albania's only marine park. Sazan sits inside the Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park, Albania's first and only marine protected area — seagrass meadows, caves and clear water that conservationists say a mega-resort would put at risk.

They will be reading about private security beating protesters while police watched. Leading European environmental diplomacy abroad while bypassing environmental law at home is not a success story! The total development including Vjosa-Narta is even higher, at to €4 billion. 💰💰💰 Once again, I’m not against investments, development, and luxury resorts. I am putting it here just because I want you to see the similarities and parallels and draw your own conclusions but there’s a pattern #hinthint #emviormentalimpactassment #lackoftransparency #ecocide Description Year 2022: Even though there’s 1001 health, economic, touristic and environmental reasons to keep fossil fuels out of Vlora Bay, here’s just one more before the 2 ships that will burn 600,000 KG of heavy oil a day arrive in Vlora! SO, reason nr 6️⃣ The “protected areas”…Narta Lagoon being the closest. From its Flamingos to its Gem of an ecosystem, no one will actually be able to protect them if this thing happens.
The environmental impact assessment (which experts tell me it’s basically a joke) says that these areas won’t be affected but, it doesn’t take a peice of papper to understand how that is not true.
Its damage its calculated that affects up to a 50km radius thus, drumroll…It affects all the protected areas around the ships ( or maybe we should better call them generators).
Not to mention this very assesment is done from a consultancy company that is a partner in a project together with the contracting company of the heavy oil power plant. 
There’s gotta be some legal meassure for such conflict of interest but anyway at the very least this assessment should be re-done..properly.
There’s little time but, as I’ve heard there’s still some “paperwork” left to help stop this so I’m really counting the responsible authorities make the right choice.
