Eras

  1. - A 16th-century depiction of Sazan. Sazan, long known to Venetian and Ottoman mariners guarding the Bay of Vlorë, as drawn in a 16th-century Mediterranean chart. For centuries it was a strategic waypoint at the mouth of the Adriatic long before it became a fortress.
  2. - The Italian occupation of Saseno, 1914. Italian forces landing to take Sazan, which they called "Saseno", on 30 October 1914. The claim was recognised by the 1915 Treaty of London, and the island became the Italian Royal Navy's southernmost outpost.
  3. - Italian stamps overprinted for Saseno. Italian postage stamps overprinted "SASENO" for use on the occupied island in 1923, a small artifact of the decades Sazan spent flying the Italian flag.
  4. - The Soviet split - and a sealed island. When Enver Hoxha broke with Moscow and aligned Albania with Mao's China in 1961, the Soviets were expelled and Sazan became a closed Albanian military zone, sealed off from the public for the rest of the communist era and beyond.

Sazan is also rumoured, never confirmed, to have housed a chemical and biological weapons facility; gas masks still lie scattered in the abandoned tunnels.
  11. - The Soviet submarine base. After 1947, Sazan and the neighbouring Pasha Liman base became a forward Soviet naval outpost, home to Whiskey-class submarines and thousands of soldiers, the USSR's deepest foothold on the Mediterranean during the early Cold War.

  14. - Karaburun-Sazan, Albania's only marine park. Sazan sits inside the Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park, Albania's first and only marine protected area, seagrass meadows, caves and clear water that conservationists say a mega-resort would put at risk.
  15. - The Narta lagoon. The shallow, salt-fringed waters of the Narta lagoon in the Vjosa-Narta protected area, one of the Adriatic's great wetlands and a refuge for migratory birds.

In 2024 a Kushner-linked developer, reported as Atlantic Incubation Partners, with the project run through Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, was granted "strategic investor" status by the Albanian government to build on Sazan and the Portonovo coast.

  20. - Saseno - the island Italy couldn't hold. Italy seized Sazan, which it called "Saseno", in 1914, a claim recognised by the Treaty of London in 1915. It became the Italian Royal Navy's southernmost base and the most heavily fortified small island in the Mediterranean, guarding the Strait of Otranto at the mouth of the Adriatic, until Italy ceded it to Albania after the Second World War in 1947.
