A decade of digging honeycombed the island with bunkers and tunnels built to survive a nuclear strike, plus fortified submarine pens. Sazan is also rumoured — never confirmed — to have housed a chemical and biological weapons facility; gas masks still lie scattered in the abandoned tunnels.
