Kalawa Jazmee at 24: fans tell the label's origin story
JUL 31 2018
Vox-pop interviews filmed at Kalawa Jazmee's 24th-anniversary showcase, where attendees try to recount how the label came together. Kalawa is the imprint that carried kwaito out of the townships onto national radio, and it is as old as South African democracy. Kwaito is house slowed to roughly 110 BPM, and its makers said so themselves, M'du Masilela: "When house music got popular, people from the ghetto called it Kwaito."
