1888
On 4 February 1888 the army opens fire on a crowd of miners and townspeople protesting the open-air sulphur roasting ("teleras") that was poisoning the surrounding valleys. Dozens are killed — the official figure has never been agreed. Spanish-language environmental and labour history dates from this incident.
