Phil Zimmermann, author of PGP, lecturing at the Hackers At Large camp in Enschede in August 2001. Zimmermann released PGP free in 1991 and spent three years under federal criminal investigation for 'munitions export' because strong cryptography was legally a weapon. The case was dropped in 1996 and effectively ended US export controls on civilian crypto.
