Louis XIV codifies court dress at Versailles — the justaucorps coat, the cravate, the high-heeled shoe (initially men's wear). Reaches such elaboration that French law forbids non-nobles from imitating it. France becomes Europe's fashion capital — and remains so for 365 years.
