Lazare Picault Makes the First French Visit

The French captain Lazare Picault, sent from Mauritius to reconnoitre the islands that would become the Seychelles, made what SIF records as the earliest documented visit to Aldabra. The largest island of the atoll still carries his name — Picard — and so does the settlement on it.
