Portuguese Ships Sight the Atoll

Portuguese vessels working the Mozambique Channel route recorded Aldabra in 1511, and it appears on Portuguese maps through the sixteenth century. The year is the conventional figure rather than a documented landfall — no named Portuguese chart pins it — and nobody stayed, because there is no anchorage and almost no fresh water.
