The Birds Start Going Too
1928
By 1928 the small labour force working the atoll was taking sea and land birds at a rate that put several species at risk of local extinction, on top of decades of turtle and sea-cucumber extraction. A tiny resident workforce quietly stripping a huge unwatched atoll is a pattern that persisted into the 1960s.
