Britain detached Aldabra, Farquhar and Desroches from the Seychelles, and the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius, to create the British Indian Ocean Territory — a colony assembled specifically to host Anglo-American military facilities east of Suez. Aldabra's near-destruction begins with this administrative act.
