Sterling Is Devalued and the Budget Cracks

The devaluation of the pound forced an emergency review of public expenditure, and the Aldabra airfield — already under sustained scientific attack, with costs rising as survey work deepened — became an obvious casualty. The atoll was saved by an argument about ecology and a run on the currency at the same time.
